Bad Science in the Mojave Experiment?
Posted by Nirav | Filed under Apple, Bay Area, Microsoft
Now, when Wil Shipley of Call Me Fishmeal writes something, I tend to listen. And not just because I like saying “Call me fishmeal” in my head. But I think he may be slightly missing the point in his recent article, “The Mojave Experiment:” Bad Science, Bad Marketing.
I do take a bit of offense when he characterizes all Microsoft products as shoddy (remember this little innovation, anyone?), but where we really differ is “Bad Marketing”. Because I think that this was, in fact, pretty good marketing. No one’s claiming that this is “science” (at least, I’m not). But it does start to change the perception that Vista is a piece of crap.

I would spend years, save up money, and buy a printing press to capture every one of Diana Kimball’s posts in dark ink and heavy paper, and then read them and keep them and read them again by the fire, in the rain, and under my covers illuminated by a flashlight. This one would be my favorite.
Except the the unread items count in my newsreader just jumped, and I haven’t checked digg in, well, hours at least.
I suppose it’s telling that whenever I feel zen-like, the internet is far away.
It’s probably even more telling that I often subsequently tweet, “Zen.” just to make sure that my story hasn’t been cast aside and forgotten by the multitudes in the last forty minutes.

Okay, so not really. I was watching TV and saw a HSN bit for a really shitty Acer laptop and had to find something similar on YouTube to show you. Favorite quote:
“But what’s so impressive about this computer is that dual-core technology that allows your processor to really operate very smooth and have great transitions.”
Right, because if I don’t have this processor, I have to go back to crappy PowerPoint ‘95 transitions.
And then some of the software that comes with it:
- PC File Transfer for Dummies Kit
- Typing Instructor
- Willmaker Plus
Hey! And then:
- Mozilla Thunderbird
- Mozilla Sunbird
I thought I saw those for free on them internets! Oh, you say that those are “pirates”? Okay, I’ll take your word for it.
“Maybe you have a son or daughter going to college, or maybe even a niece or nephew. I mean, they’ll need something like this to take with them on campus at some of the larger universities, where they have, you know, some of the very ‘hot spots’.
Hot spots? Now those just sound dangerous and sinful to me.
“I really appreciate the sacrifice that some us have made to have a computer at home. Yeah, it’s fun to get on the internet, it’s fun to read some of those blogs…I was online last week looking at video footage.”
And you were on the internet last week? That recently? Well that’s just wasteful.
Anyways, here’s the video:
Video: Pulp Fiction in Typography

Pulp Fiction just came on TV (so it’s rendered impotent by virtue of the fact that its most famous attribute is bleeped out) and it reminded me of this very polished video of one of the early scenes in the movie, made completely in typography.
